Front Cover First Draft

Volume First Draft
This is my first draft of my magazine, improvements are needed however I think this is a good start.

Test Shots

Test Shots

Two Shot

Fairly okay two shot, shows both people from the waist upwards, however lighting could be improved along with framing. A shot like this could be used for a double page spread or the contents page.

Long Shot

This long shot is good as it shows the full body, however this could be improved as a fair bit of the shot is of the floor. A shot like this could be used on the front cover as the feature artist for example.

Group Shot

This group shot is a lot better than the one below as it is more dynamic, meaning that the shot is not flat and is rather dynamic due to each person been closer or further away from the next. This shot could be used for a double page spread or a contents page. To improve I could light the shot a little better.

Group Shot Two

This group shot is not as good as the one above as it seems rather flat, the people in the shot do not have any dynamic feel to them, and all seem to be on the same level. Improve this by making the shot more dynamic. Again this shot could be used for a content or a double page spread.

Mid Shot

Simple mid shot showing from the chest upwards, lighting is good as its not to dark or bright.

 Medium close up

This shot is pretty good, as it shows more detail of the face, a shot like this could be used on the front cover or in the contents page.

Bad lighting and framing

This shot is just straight up bad, lighting is to dark and it is framed very poorly as the chin is cut off leaving to much blank space at the top.

Posed Shot

This posed shot it rather good as it represents the genre well. This Shot could be used for the front cover, contents and even the double page spread. Framing is rather good as it does not cut off any important parts.

Posed Shot Two

This shot is the same as the one above just portrait which may be more appropriate for a contents page.

Focus Group

Magazine Focus Group

Focus Group Response
Why was the focus group useful?
The focus group was useful because it allowed me to find out information about a range of things such as: General information on how my target audience access music information, for example people in the focus group said that they access information on music through the internet. This helped me as I now know that I could put a internet link or a QR on the front of the magazine, this link would provide more information on the main article or of the magazine in general.
Another reason why the focus group was useful was because it verified that the price of my magazine was acceptable for the audience I was aiming it at. I chose a price of £2.50 for my magazine as it was similar to the price of magazine in the same genre, the focus group verified that it is an acceptable price.

The final reason why the focus group was useful was because I got information on how to make the magazine more appealing to my target audience. The focus group taught me that people in my target audience would buy a magazine over another if it had a better free gift or a better prize. Along with this the focus group said that if a magazine had a more professional layout it is more appealing on the shelf.

How has it helped you in the decisions you will make when creating your magazine?
The focus group helped me as it gave me some new ideas of how to make the magazine more
Another new idea it gave me was to put a free gift or a prize on the front cover. I was going to do this anyway but the focus group suggested that they would buy a magazine over another based on the free gift, therefore i would make the gift or prize

Did you find out something that you did not expect to?
I did not find any information that I did not expect, however it did help me change some things on my magazine to make it more appealing.

Has it made you change any of your initial ideas?
The focus group did make me change multiple things in my magazine such as: making the prize more visible and more noticeable for the audience, and putting a internet source somewhere within the magazine, so people can get more information. However these changes are nothing drastic and did not make me re-think all my previous ideas.

Fonts

Fonts

A selection of fonts for my magazine.

These fonts could be used for anything in my magazine. Most of these fonts would be good for my magazine masthead, as they all stand out and fit the genre.
After some looking over and asking a few people I have decided to use the font URBAN JUNGLE as my masthead font, I think this will fit very well as it looks professional while still having enough 'edge' to fit with mt chosen genre of rock.

Reader Profile

Reader Profile Research

What are reader profiles?
A reader profile is a visual representation of the audiences interests, and is a good guide on the adverts featured in the magazine. It also features a text section, This is the main source of information on the reader profile, it gives how much money has been injected into brands because of the magazine, for example it says on average NME readers spend £152 on footwear on average per year. It also gives simple information such as: Age, Gender and Social Class.

What is the purpose of a reader profile?

The purpose of a reader profile is to ensure that the magazine is targeted at the correct audience. This is so the magazine advertises the correct product, for example in NME it will advertise more manly products such as Jack Daniel and Puma. Reader profiles are not just useful to show what the reader of a certain magazine like, It tells people what the whole genre enjoys. This means that people who are creating a magazine for the Rock genre can look at reader profiles for NME and Kerrang! This will tell the maker of the magazine what adverts will be the most effective in the magazine.

Conventions Analysis

Conventions Analysis
This is my conventions analysis of a front cover, contents and double page spread. The magazine I used was Q magazine as it fit into the genre I want to base my magazine on.

Both of these magazines follow conventions, such as the use of a barcode, clear and bold masthead, and a feature model. The magazine on the left has a offer and has a main feature story that relates to the image. Both magazines have feature stories that are situated around the edge of the magazine, along with a brief overview of the story.
